Red Devil Angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare ‘Red Devil’ / Premium Koi) is a stunning selectively bred colour variant of the classic freshwater angelfish. It features vibrant red-to-orange caps, marbled black-and-white patterning, and elegant long fins. These fish originate from generations of hobbyist breeding focused on intensifying the “red cap” and koi-like mosaic patterns. They are graceful, semi-aggressive South American cichlids that thrive in well-maintained, planted tanks with stable water conditions. Red Devil Angelfish have tall, disc-shaped bodies and long fins, so vertical space matters more than floor space. They lay eggs on vertical surfaces (broad plant leaves, slate, heater glass, or driftwood). Red Devil Angelfish are among the most beautiful and iconic freshwater fish. With a properly sized, well-planted tank and attentive care, they will display brilliant colours and graceful swimming for many years.
TANK SET UP: Minimum for 1 adult: 76- 114 litres. Ideally 284 litres for a community tank with 5–6 angels. Use Amazon swords, Vallisneria, Hygrophila, Java fern, or Cryptocoryne for cover and resting spots. Use branches or slate for spawning sites and territory definition. Dark sand or fine gravel — enhances their vibrant red colouration.
TIPS: Avoid wide-but-shallow tanks, which stunt fin growth and stress the fish.
TANK MATE:
• Larger tetras (Rummy nose, Congo, Lemon, Black skirt)
• Corydoras catfish
• Bristlenose or small L-number plecos
• Peaceful dwarf cichlids (Apistogramma, Rams — in larger tanks)
• Hatchetfish or pencilfish
FILTRATION: Use a strong but gentle filter (canister or HOB) and add a powerhead if needed for circulation, with gentle water movement.
MAINTENANCE: Ammonia / Nitrite 0ppm; Nitrate <20-40 0ppm. Perform 25–50% water changes weekly
LIGHTING: Moderate to subdued (bright light can wash out colours and stress fish).
FEEDING: High-quality cichlid or angelfish pellets/flakes (fish meal as first ingredient, ~38%+ protein). Supplement 2–3 times per week with bloodworms, brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, daphnia. Occasional blanched zucchini, spirulina flakes, or other greens for gut health. Feed twice daily
