Pacific Blue-eye (Pseudomugil signifer), also called Pacific Blue Eye Rainbowfish, Signifer Rainbowfish, or Butterfly Rainbowfish, is a small Australian native (East Coast) schooling fish popular in nano and planted aquariums. They are peaceful, active schooling fish. Keep in groups of at least 6–10 (ideally more, with a slight female bias). They are mid-to-upper level swimmers and appreciate open areas plus plant cover. Pacific Blue-eye egg depositors (scatter eggs among fine-leaved plants or spawning mops).
APPEARANCE: Slender, semi-transparent to silvery/pale yellow or olive body with a distinctive bright blue eye ring/iris. Males develop longer, more colourful fins (often yellow to orange with black markings) and display actively; females are plainer with shorter fins.
TANK SET UP: Densely planted tank with fine sand or smooth substrate, driftwood/roots, and floating plants for security and diffused light. Moderate flow and good oxygenation are appreciated. Use a tight-fitting lid—they can jump. Mature, stable water is important.
TANK MATE: Good with other peaceful, similarly sized fish (small rainbows that won’t hybridise if purity is a concern, certain gobies, rasboras, tetras, etc.). They may eat tiny shrimp fry.
FILTRATION: Use an efficient filter providing a gentle-to-moderate flow rate of 4 to 5 times your tank volume per hour.
Gentle to moderate; avoid heavy turbulent currents. Sponge filters or low-flow internal/external power filters.
MAINTENANCE: Ammonia/Nitrite 0ppm; Nitrate <20-40 ppm. Regular 20% to 30% water changes.
LIGHTING: Provide moderate aquarium lighting set for 6 to 8 hours daily. Use floating plants or dim lighting options to diffuse brightness.
FEEDING: Offer small live or frozen foods (Artemia nauplii, daphnia, microworms, etc.) plus high-quality fine flakes or micro-pellets. Variety improves colour and health. Feed small amounts 1–2 times daily.
