*** Moderate to advanced Aquarist Only ***
Barramundi (Lates calcarifer) is a popular native fish in Australia. While they can be kept in aquariums, they are not suitable for most home setups due to their massive adult size and rapid growth. They are predatory and demanding, often better suited to very large custom tanks, ponds, or commercial aquaponics systems rather than typical hobbyist aquariums. They are hardy but require excellent water quality, space, and planning for their eventual size. Many owners end up rehoming them as they grow too large. If you don’t have (or can’t commit to) a truly enormous setup, consider smaller native Australian fish like Australian bass, silver perch, or jade perch instead.
TANK SIZE: For juveniles, start in a large tank (e.g., 500+ liters / ~130+ gallons). For adults, experts recommend very large systems—at least 1,000–2,000+ liters (250–500+ gallons) per fish, or ideally a custom tank/pond of 8+ feet long (e.g., 20’ x 6’ x 10’ or ~30,000 liters for a full-grown specimen). A 6-foot tank is only temporary.
FILTRATION: Strong filtration with good flow (slow to moderate current). Heavy aeration/oxygenation is essential. They tolerate clear or slightly turbid water and appreciate hides like submerged driftwood, rock ledges, or structures for security.
DECORE: Sand or fine gravel; plenty of open swimming space. They like stable conditions and can be kept in freshwater long-term
LIGHTING: Moderate; they are active during the day and can become tame.
MAINTENANCE: Ammonia and nitrite at 0 ppm; low nitrates. Perform regular partial water changes (20–30% weekly) and monitor closely—use a good biofilter and test kits.
NTK: They stop feeding below ~20°C and can suffer stress or die in sustained cooler water. Use a reliable heater/chiller if needed.
