Sailfin Glass Perchlet (Ambassis agrammus) is a peaceful Australian native glassfish valued for its translucent silvery body, tall sail-like dorsal fin, and schooling behaviour.
Found in freshwater streams, lakes, dams, and billabongs, often forming large aggregations among dense aquatic vegetation. It completes its entire life cycle in freshwater.
They are Active mid-water schooling fish. Keep in groups of at least 6 (more is better) so they feel secure and display natural behaviour. In small numbers, they may become skittish or mildly feisty with each other.
TANK SET UP: For a group of 6+; longer tanks preferred for swimming space.
Well-planted with open mid-water swimming areas. Use fine-leaved plants, driftwood, rocks, and floating plants for cover and security. A dark substrate enhances their silvery colour.
NOTE: Subdued or filtered lighting brings out iridescence; bright light can make them more shy.
TANK MATE: Rainbowfish, peaceful tetras, rasboras, Corydoras, Kuhli loaches, peaceful gouramis, and other small non-aggressive community fish.
AVOID: Large or aggressive cichlids, fin-nippers, large predators, and boisterous species that outcompete them for food.
FILTRATION: Gentle to moderate flow.
MAINTENANCE: Regular water changes are more important than exact numbers. Zero ammonia/nitrite is essential.
FEEDING: In the aquarium, they can be picky at first.
• Frozen or live: brine shrimp, daphnia, bloodworms, mysis, blackworms
• High-quality micro pellets, small floating/slow-sinking granules, and eventually quality flakes
• Continue providing meaty foods even after they accept prepared diets.
• Offer a varied diet and feed small amounts 1–2 times daily.
