Red Horseface, commonly known as the Red-Striped Eartheater or Surinam Eartheater. Their scientific name is Geophagus surinamensis, and it is a popular South American cichlid prized for its iridescent colours (blues, reds, greens on a yellowish/olive base), elongated body, and constant substrate-sifting behaviour. Originating from South America (slow-moving, sandy/muddy bottoms). They are mouthbrooders. Best kept in groups (4–8+) to reduce aggression and encourage natural behaviours. This species rewards keepers who provide a spacious, sandy-bottom tank with stable water quality — their constant foraging and colours make them engaging display fish.
TANK SET UP: Minimum tank size 200–300+ litres for a pair/small group; a larger 400+ litres is strongly recommended for groups due to their size and activity. Long, wide tanks are best. Fine sand (essential — they sift constantly; avoid sharp gravel to prevent gill injury). Provide an open swimming space + hiding spots (driftwood, smooth rocks, caves). Hardy plants (Anubias, Java fern) or floating plants; they may uproot delicate ones
TANK MATE: With similarly sized, non-aggressive fish like other peaceful South American cichlids, larger tetras, Corydoras, plecos, angelfish (with caution).
Avoid highly aggressive species (e.g., Oscars) or very small fish that could be eaten.
FILTRATION: A robust filtration system capable of turning over 6 to 8 times the total tank volume per hour, while maintaining a moderate to gentle water flow to prevent high-stress currents.
MAINTENANCE: Keep ammonia/nitrites at 0. Frequent water changes (30–50% weekly).
LIGHTING: Moderate lighting.
FEEDING: Provide a varied diet of high-quality sinking pellets, frozen/live foods (bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia), and vegetable matter (spirulina, blanched veggies). Feed once or twice daily.
