The Maculata Rasbora (Boraras maculata) is a tiny, peaceful nano fish popular for planted aquariums. They are sensitive to copper-based medications. These are fantastic for experienced nano keepers or blackwater setups, but can be finicky for absolute beginners due to their size and parameter needs. A well-planted blackwater nano setup is ideal — they thrive and show better colours with tannins and cover. They are egg-scatterers with no parental care.
TANK SET UP: Minimum Tank 20–40 litres for a small group; larger is better for stability and schooling. Long, low tanks suit their swimming style. Dark sand or fine gravel (enhances colours). Densely planted with fine-leaved plants (Java moss, Cryptocoryne, Cabomba), driftwood, leaf litter; use Indian almond leaves.
TANK MATE: Keep with other tiny, peaceful nano species only. Other Boraras (e.g., Chilli Rasboras), pygmy Corydoras, small shrimp (watch fry), ember tetras, or other micro fish.
FILTRATION: Gentle or minimal flow (they come from near-stagnant waters). A sponge filter or a low-flow HOB works well.
MAINTENANCE: Ammonia/Nitrite 0 ppm; Nitrates <20 ppm. 20–30% weekly water changes.
LIGHTING: Dim to moderate lighting. Use floating plants (e.g., Salvinia, frogbit) to diffuse light and provide cover.
FEEDING: Live/frozen: Baby brine shrimp, Daphnia, Cyclops, microworms (favourites): crushed flakes, nano pellets, or high-quality micro foods. Feed small amounts 2–3 times daily.
