Hengeli Rasbora (Trigonostigma hengeli) — also called Glowlight Rasbora, Hengel’s Rasbora, or Copper Rasbora — is a small, peaceful schooling fish native to slow-moving blackwater streams and peat swamps in Sumatra and Borneo (Indonesia). It is one of the smallest members of the Trigonostigma group (related to the Harlequin Rasbora).
TANK SET UP:
• Heavily planted tank with open swimming space in the front/middle.
• Dark substrate (makes the orange stripe pop).
• Driftwood, leaf litter (Indian almond / catappa leaves), and floating plants for dappled light and tannins.
• Have a secure lid (they can jump).
NOTE: Dim to moderate lighting (bright overhead light can make them shy).
TANK MATE: Excellent community fish with other small, peaceful species such as:
• Chilli Rasboras, Celestial Pearl Danios, Ember Tetras, other small tetras/rasboras
• Pygmy Corydoras, Otocinclus
• Cherry or other small shrimp
• Dwarf gouramis or similar calm species (provided the tank is large enough)
AVOID: Avoid large or aggressive fish that could eat or harass them.
NOTE: They must be kept in a proper school — at least 8–10 individuals, with 12+ better. Smaller numbers lead to stressed, pale, inactive fish that hide.
FILTRATION: Gentle and low flow — they prefer calm water.
MAINTENANCE: Ammonia/nitrite 0ppm, Nitrate < 20% ppm. Weekly water changes of 20–30%
FEEDING: Omnivorous micro-predator with a small mouth.
• High-quality crushed flakes or micro pellets.
• Frozen and live foods: baby brine shrimp, daphnia, cyclops, micro worms; occasional small bloodworms.
• Feed small amounts so nothing sinks and rots uneaten.
