Albino Cyrtocara moorii (Albino Blue Dolphin Cichlid) is a color morph of the standard Blue Dolphin Cichlid from Lake Malawi, Africa. It lacks normal pigmentation, resulting in a pale white or pinkish body with red or pink eyes, while retaining the species’ characteristic “dolphin-like” nuchal (forehead) hump, especially prominent in mature males. This is a haplochromine cichlid (not a mbuna) known for its relatively peaceful temperament compared to many other African cichlids. These fish are intermediate-level keepers due to their size, water requirements, and need for a mature, stable tank. They thrive in species-only or compatible Malawi community setups with ample space. They will be slightly more sensitive to bright lighting (due to lack of pigment) and require good water quality to prevent stress or health issues common in albinos.
TANK: If you’re setting up a tank you’ll likely need to buffer with Malawi salts or aragonite to achieve the proper hard, alkaline conditions. Fine sand substrate (they like to dig/sift); open swimming areas with some rockwork or hiding spots for territory breaks, but not overly decorated. No sharp gravel.
TANK MATE: They do well in groups (one male with multiple females) in large tanks with plenty of open swimming space. Best kept with other peaceful to semi-peaceful Malawi cichlids of similar size (e.g., certain peacocks or haps).
SPECIAL NOTES FOR ALBINO VARIANT: Provide some shaded areas or moderate lighting to reduce stress. They share all standard care needs with the blue form.
