Koi Angelfish (a selectively bred variety of Pterophyllum scalare) are stunning freshwater cichlids known for their koi-like mottled orange, black, white, and yellow patterns. They are graceful, intelligent mid-water swimmers popular in community tanks. Their scientific name is Pterophyllum scalare (Koi variant).
Koi Angelfish have tall, triangular bodies and long fins, so vertical space is critical. Short tanks can stunt growth or damage fins. Best in groups of 4-6+ (ideally introduced young) to spread aggression and allow natural pairing. They can be territorial with their own kind.
Koi Angelfish reward attentive keepers with graceful movement and vibrant displays.
TANK SET UP: Minimum Tank Size 120 -160 (tall) for a pair; 220+ litres recommended for a small group or community. Larger (300 litres) is better for multiple adults. Tall (at least 45-60 cm height). Long tanks (120+ cm) help reduce territorial issues. Dark substrate enhances colours. Add tall plants (e.g., Amazon swords, Vallisneria, Java fern), driftwood, rocks, and open swimming space. Provide hiding spots and vertical surfaces for security and potential spawning.
TANK MATE: Similar-sized peaceful fish like rummy-nose tetra, rasboras, corydoras, larger peaceful cichlids, adult dwarf gouramis, or Apistogramma.
FILTRATION: Moderate filtration with gentle current (they prefer calm water). Canister or sponge filters work well. Strong flow can stress them.
MAINTENANCE: Ammonia/Nitrite 0 ppm; Nitrates <20-30 ppm. Perform 25-30% weekly water changes.
LIGHTING: Koi angelfish thrive under moderate, natural-spectrum LED lighting for 8 to 10 hours a day.
FEEDING: High-quality cichlid/tropical flakes or pellets (spirulina for plant matter). Frozen/live bloodworms, brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, daphnia—occasional blanched spinach, zucchini, or peas. Feed small amounts 2-3 times daily.
