Odessa Barb (Pethia padamya) is a colourful, active schooling fish known for its vibrant red and black markings, especially in males. It’s a hardy, beginner-friendly freshwater species popular in community aquariums. Odessa Barbs originate from slow-moving streams, rivers, and flooded fields in Myanmar (Burma).
TANK SET UP: Minimum 80-120 litres for a small school (5–6 fish) and 140 litres. They prefer well-planted environments with some water flow. Dense live plants (e.g., Java fern, Vallisneria, or Cryptocoryne) and darker substrates that enhance their colours: open swimming space, and moderate flow.
TANK MATE is better for a larger group and greater stability. To reduce shyness and aggression, they are peaceful but can nip fins of slower or long-finned fish (e.g., angelfish). The best tankmates are Zebra Danios, Neon Tetras, Rummy Nose Tetras, and Harlequin Rasboras. Corydoras Catfish, Kuhli Loaches. Swordtails, Gouramis, Bristlenose Pleco, Bolivian Ram Cichlid.
LIGHTING: Low to moderate lighting brings out the best colours.
MAINTENANCE: 10–25% every 1–2 weeks to keep nitrates low and parameters stable. 0 ppm; Nitrates: <20 ppm.
FILTRATION: Moderate filtration with good oxygenation is key—these active fish are sensitive to low oxygen. Aim for 4–5 times the tank volume turnover per hour. Hang-on-back (HOB), canister, or sponge/box filters work well. Provide gentle to moderate flow (from slow-moving waters). Aeration helps. A dirty filter can fade colours.
FEEDING: Flakes, pellets, frozen/live foods (brine shrimp, daphnia), and some veggies. Feed 2–3 times daily in small amounts.
