Here’s a stunning look at Tiger Oscars (a popular colour variety of the Oscar cichlid, Astronotus ocellatus). These fish are known for their bold black-and-orange tiger-like patterns, intelligence, and big personalities. Many owners report that they play with toys or follow their fingers along the glass and beg for food!
Tiger Oscars are hardy but demanding due to their size and messy eating habits (they produce a lot of waste, creating a heavy bioload). These fish make rewarding (but commitment-heavy) pets.
TANK: They need a long tank with plenty of swimming space (at least 4–6 feet in length). Overcrowding leads to stress and aggression. Everything must be smooth (no sharp edges), heavy, and stable.
MAINTENANCE: Perform 30–50% weekly water changes. They’re messy eaters, so good flow helps. Keep ammonia/nitrites at 0 ppm; nitrates under 40 ppm.
TANK SET UP: Sand or fine gravel bottom. Add rocks, driftwood, and sturdy plants (or plastic ones—Oscars love to rearrange and dig). Provide hiding spots, but leave open swimming areas.
TANK MATE: Other large South American cichlids, plecos, or fast-swimming species like silver dollars.
FEEDING: They’re gluttons—feed 2–3 times daily in small amounts.
