Brachydanio kerri (Blue Danio / Kerr’s Danio): Known for a more distinct vibrant blue to powdery-blue or yellowish body marked with prominent, clear horizontal gold or pinkish-yellow lateral stripes. It inhabits clear forest streams over rocks and gravel. Native to Southeast Asia, favouring clear forest streams and small rivers. Blue danios are hardy and social fish, and do best in groups of at least six. Blue danios can withstand colder temperatures than most freshwater fish,
NOTE: Populations from different localities vary in base body colouration; those from the northern end of the range tend to be blue, while those from the south are more yellowish.
TANK SET UP: They prefer a dark sandy or gravel bottom aquarium with plenty of available swimming space. Add driftwood roots and branches, plus aquatic plants like Microsorum, Bolbitis, or Anubias that attach to the decor. This species needs a tight-fitting lid, as it jumps and can fit through surprisingly small gaps.
TANK MATE: Ideal for community tanks with other peaceful, similarly sized fish. Their calm nature makes them compatible with a variety of tank mates, including small tetras, rasboras, and dwarf cichlids.
AVOID: large or aggressive species that may intimidate or prey on them.
FILTRATION: Provide a small powerhead or an additional filter inlet to add flow, but don’t overdo it.
MAINTENANCE: Ammonia/nitrite 0ppm, Nitrate below 40 ppm (ideally under 20 ppm), and perform a 25% to 50% weekly water change.
FEEDING:
Feed high-quality flake foods, small pellets, and live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, bloodworms, or freeze-dried tubifex, which they will also readily accept.
