Longfin Red Balloon Ram Care Guide (Mikrogeophagus ramirezi variant). The Longfin Red Balloon Ram is a selectively bred ornamental variant of the classic Ram cichlid. It features a rounded “balloon” body shape, elongated flowing fins, and vibrant red/golden-red colouration with blue accents. Rams prefer warm, soft, slightly acidic to neutral water. Stability is critical—they are intolerant of ammonia/nitrite spikes and poor water quality. Peaceful community fish but may squabble over territories (especially males or during spawning). Best kept as a pair or small group. This variant adds beautiful colour and movement to a well-maintained planted tank. With stable warm water and good husbandry, they make rewarding pets.
TANK SET UP: Minimum tank size 60–75+ litres for a pair—120+ litres for a small group or community to reduce territorial issues. Fine sand or smooth gravel allows natural foraging/sifting behaviour. Dense live plants (e.g., Amazon swords, Vallisneria, Java fern, mosses) for cover and security. Driftwood, rocks, caves, and hiding spots to create territories and reduce stress. Open swimming areas mixed with visual barriers.
TANK MATE: Peaceful small fish: Tetras (cardinals, neons), rasboras, small peaceful barbs, Corydoras. Other compatible dwarfs or bottom-dwellers (avoid aggressive ones).
FILTRATION: Moderate filtration with a gentle current (they dislike strong flow).
MAINTENANCE: Ammonia/Nitrite 0 ppm; Nitrates <15–20 ppm (keep low). Perform 20–30% weekly.
LIGHTING: Moderate to subdued to highlight colours without stressing the fish.
FEEDING: High-quality cichlid flakes, micro-pellets, or crushed pellets (slow-sinking).
Live/frozen: Brine shrimp, bloodworms, daphnia, micro-worms.
Vegetable matter: Blanched spinach, spirulina. Feed small amounts 2–3 times daily.
TIP: A mature, cycled, planted tank is essential. Balloon variants are more sensitive, so avoid newly set up tanks.
