Colombian Redfin Tetra (Hyphessobrycon columbianus). Also known as Colombian Tetra, Red-Blue Colombian Tetra, Blue Flame Tetra, or Blue-Red Colombian Tetra. This hardy, active schooling tetra displays a silvery body with striking iridescent blue-green upper flanks and vivid red fins (especially the caudal and anal fins). They swim in the mid- to upper-water column. They are egg-scattering, free spawners with no parental care.
Keep in a school of at least 6–8, ideally 8–10+. Larger groups reduce nipping and promote tighter, more natural schooling. They are generally peaceful community fish but can fin-nip, especially if understocked or stressed.
TANK SET UP: A longer tank is preferred for swimming space.
• Provide open mid-water swimming areas with planted zones or decor along the sides/back for security.
• Darker substrate (black sand or aquasoil) intensifies colours.
• Live plants (Anubias, Java fern, Amazon swords, stem plants) or floating plants for shade and cover; they show best colouration in structured, planted setups.
TANK MATE: Other medium-sized tetras, larger rasboras, peaceful barbs, rainbowfish, Corydoras, and non-aggressive cichlids such as Bolivian rams or keyhole cichlids. Similar-sized, active community fish work best.
AVOID: Slow-moving or long-finned species (e.g., fancy guppies, bettas, angelfish, long-finned tetras).
FILTRATION: Moderate filtration (4–5× tank volume turnover) and gentle-to-moderate flow. They appreciate clean water and some movement.
MAINTENANCE: Ammonia/nitrite: 0 ppm; nitrate: change <20% of the water. 20–30% of the water weekly.
NOTE: They prefer soft, slightly acidic water, but stable neutral/moderately hard water is usually fine.
FEEDING: Unfussy.
• Offer a high-quality flake or micro-pellet as the staple,
• supplemented regularly with frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, daphnia, brine shrimp (Artemia), and cyclops.
• Include some plant or algal content.
• Feed once or twice daily.
IMPORTANT: They are enthusiastic feeders and can outcompete slower fish—distribute food in multiple spots if needed.
